On March 19, 2025, a group of collaborators from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) visited the new location of the Glass Hub by ReciVeci®. The objective of the visit was to review the progress of projects that have been beneficiaries of Business Development Funds, such as the Glass Hub in 2024.
The delegation was made up of representatives from OIM Ecuador, as well as offices in Panama and Colombia, and included technical staff from various nationalities such as Brazil, Portugal, France, Italy, Switzerland and Mexico. During the tour, the application of these funds in the expansion and consolidation of the Hub was presented, as well as future strategies for its growth.
Lorena Gallardo, Co-founder and Manager of Technologies and Innovations at ReciVeci®, explained how the Hub was structured since its inception and where it is being projected. He also addressed the decision to focus on glass recycling, highlighting its potential as a 100% and infinitely recyclable material, but also recognizing the challenges faced by its recovery in Ecuador. In this context, the joint work with O-I CRIDESA to improve the recycling cycle and promote the recovery of this material was emphasized.
Another of the key issues discussed was the evolution of the Glass Hub business model, which seeks to strengthen the participation of companies in the recovery of their own material, promoting greater responsibility in waste management. In addition, during the visit, we had the opportunity to talk with the operators to verify their working conditions, reaffirming the Hub's commitment to the 'right tonne', that is, the focus not only on recovering the material but on dignifying the conditions under which it is obtained.
With an average of 100 tons of recycled glass per month, the Hub is committed to transforming the reality of recycling in Ecuador and consolidating a more efficient and sustainable system in the recycling chain for this material. In addition, it seeks to be a reference for citizens, academics, institutions and organizations related to waste management.
We appreciate this visit, and we are continuing to take steps towards the country's inclusive circular economy!
